Back to the Basics: What You as the Talent Should Bring to a Photoshoot

Congrats! You finally landed that gig with your favorite brand. Your agent tells you that they’d just like for you to bring a few things to the shoot. Great. What’s that mean? Well, after over 20 years of telling people “just bring some normal, everyday clothing” - we’ve seen some pretty crazy choices - from nothing but torn and distressed music clothing to a step above underwear in the lobby of a corporate office. So, here to keep you from turning into a story we’ve got one of our favorite things. A list of what to bring.

Top 20 Clothing Items to Bring to a Photoshoot

Two well dressed gorgeous female models on a dark grey background.

Dresses / One-Pieces

  • Solid-color dress with simple lines, no distracting prints - optional if this feel like you, if not skip it.

  • Jumpsuit or romper - again, nice to have if it feel like you

Shoes

  •  Clean sneakers, unless it fits the shoot, PLEASE have clean shoes.

  • Dress shoes and if appropriate a flat and heel option is always nice.

Accessories (Keep Minimal & Neutral)

  • Classic belt in black or brown

  • Watch or subtle jewelry, again if appropriate.

  • Undershirts, socks, and backup layers - please match white and white, black with black, etc. you know who you are.

Special Notes:

  • Avoid logos, busy patterns, and neon colors - the focus needs to be on you or the product, not why your shirt is vibrating in camera.

  • Bring multiples in similar shades if you have, have blue, pink and purple, bring them better to have and not need them.

  • Think layers, more outfit variety in less time, you know how fast these things can move - bring stuff that can be a fast change.

Tops

  • Crisp white or neutral button-down shirt - timeless, classic look.

  • Solid black shirt or blouse, I used to say no black, but it really is slimming.

  • Neutral-colored t-shirt or 2 (gray, beige, navy)

  • Dress shirt/blouse in a soft color, a light blue or other pastel, think nice like a spring day.

  • A bold, single-color top - something bright and fun - a little color never hurts as an option

Bottoms

  • Well fitted denim - IF you’re into the distressed and holes, super cool, however ask before you bring.

  • Dark trousers/slacks (think professional)

  • Khakis or chinos

  • Skirt or dress pants in neutral tones - think nice dinner with mom

  • Tailored shorts - if appropriate.

Outer Layers

  • Blazer (navy, black, or beige) - classic, can elevate any look really

  • Light cardigan or sweater - again, easy “half step” to dress up

  • Casual jacket if appropriate - a chance to show your personality
